Discovering New Horizons |
The Newtown School is the first IGBC Gold Certified Green School in India under the new school category. We took our first step towards this journey of excellence, on 16th April 2015. | |
The global technological landscape is evolving at a frenetic pace. Information travels at a speed hitherto unanticipated, even a decade ago. The Newtown School (NTS), located amidst one of the fastest economically developing regions of Eastern India, arrives at precisely this cusp of global transformation. |
The school seeks to blend academics with practical knowledge in a unique ecosystem. This amalgamation will be synchronized with the values, which will transform each student into an asset for society. NTS has set a new benchmark in education through its approach towards the entire process of imparting education. |

The curriculum at NTS has been designed to inculcate a multi-dimensional approach in problem solving through teamwork and research. We at NTS believe that every student is unique in terms of creative talent, interests and inclination. Hence, our customised approach towards each student nurtures each child into a confident individual, capable of coping with the challenges of tomorrow. |

Real superheroes live in the heart of small children fighting big battles. Our very own Ananda Gopal Ghosal , a student of class VII has been a fighter since birth battling Kabuki Syndrome a congenital disorder, which afflicts one in 10 million. This disorder has caused an irreversible kidney malfunction and the child according to the nephrologist, requires an immediate kidney transplant. He has however, never allowed his physical difficulties to get the better of him and have participated in all our School activities with focussed enthusiasm and zeal. An epitome of extreme mental strength, Ananda is one of our academically promising students as well.

Our Physics, Chemistry and Biology Labs are fully equipped with all modern facilities and equipment to allow children to engage in learning through research. The Labs have been planned keeping the safety of the students in mind. Well-trained professionals assist and engage children, encouraging them to work in groups as well as individually to enable them to correlate practical and theoretical experiences.
Physics Labs
Chemistry Labs
Biology Labs
The concept of the Language Lab has been integral to the development of linguistic skills wherein the students undergo intensive training in speaking and listening. The primary motive behind such an initiative is to augment the aural and oral comprehension skills of the children through specialised activities in the Lab.
In the Math Lab, the children are encouraged to exercise their practical acumen through the use of age and curriculum specific kits. Additionally, it also helps them to dispel fear of the subject and makes it fun to learn.
The Newtown School is one of the first schools in Kolkata to have a Robotics Lab with Lego kits as well as ample facilities and equipment to accommodate large groups of students. Robotics as a field is a culmination of Math and Science and helps students observe scientific concepts in action when they build robots and programme them using open source software. The students use MacBook Air laptops to enable them to enhance the efficiency of the programmed robots. At present, we have two such Labs.
Digital smartboards with software designed to provide a multidimensional view of curricular concepts are the norm in every classroom. Additionally, the state-of-the art 3D AV Lab holds pride of place as complex biological or chemical processes or natural phenomena are explained comprehensively through 3D videos.
We have two richly endowed and modern Information and Communication Technology Labs to allow students to express themselves without restraint and to prepare them for the future. Meticulously planned and equipped with unmatched hardware and software, updated to their latest versions, the Mac Labs provide children with opportunities to research, create, explore and challenge their abilities and skill sets.
To take the essence of live demonstration a step further and to engage children into learning and discovery, the School has two 3D Printing Labs for the children of Classes III to VIII. They have two dedicated periods over a week to experience the excitement of 3D Printing. They are taught how to design 3D objects and images as well as geometrical images and then print them using a state-of-the-art 3D printer.
Computer Labs
STEM Labs
iPAD LABS and iPAD CURRICULUM
There are two dedicated iPad Labs at The Newtown School, where children from Classes LKG to II are taken twice a week to foster their thematic, linguistic and numerical concepts through the deft handling of various apps by the children themselves. The facilitators’ instructions are followed to the core, right from knowing the different aspects of the gadgets and handling them, to manoeuvring them, to strengthening their knowledge.
For Classes III to V, structured curriculum delivery and assessments of learning are done through individual deployment of iPads for every child and through the Classroom management app, wherein a teacher has complete knowledge of the understanding and the learning achievements of every child in the class.
We have an iTheatre Animation Studio for our students from Classes LKG to Class II. iTheatre is a novel integrated interactive system for story-creation and multimedia storytelling dedicated to young children. iTheatre is designed as an instrument to support children during all their creative activities: from the preparation of characters and backgrounds, drawn with their chosen technique, to the transformation into digital form and the subsequent creation and sharing of the animation movie, through live story-telling. It emerges from the innovative vision of a collaborative learning environment: an environment to foster the sharing of knowledge and relationships.
SCULPTURE STUDIOS
The Newtown School believes in the holistic development of a child, which would be incomplete without the development of creative faculties in the children. The Sculpture Studio is an important part of that endeavour, where the children learn to infuse life into clay by making beautiful clay models under expert guidance.
ART LABS
The Art Labs aim at honing the creative talents of the children in a specialised environment, enabling them to excel in fine arts. Here, students are encouraged to let their imaginations run wild and their creativity flow unhindered. We have two such labs for this purpose.
DANCE ROOMS
The Newtown School has a specially created environment to train students and hone their inclination in dancing. With an aim to expose each student to our rich cultural heritage, the School’s dance teachers work with each child, nurturing talent, inculcating confidence and polishing poise and performance. Separate dance rooms for Junior and Senior students are there.
QCT is a unique model that interweaves a behaviour management system with a process of personal and social growth. Its premise is that the most effective way to promote positive behaviour and respectful relationships is through working on moral development within a structured Quality Circle Time approach. In contemporary society low self-esteem poses an enormous public health risk. It is usually present from early childhood or adolescence. Research has established a strong correlation between a child’s self-esteem and his/her academic success. Children who feel good about themselves learn more easily and retain information longer. Having Quality Circle Time in a structured and proper manner is essential for this.
SENIOR RESOURCE CENTRES
Our Resource Centres are an extension of the classroom and through year-round research and discovery they promote the spirit of learning amongst the students. Separate facilities exist for Junior and Senior Sections. Both facilities have been planned in accordance with the curriculum of the students pertaining to that section. Each section has a vast and updated collection of periodicals, journals, magazines, newsletters, reference books and volumes of encyclopaedia in all formats. The facility is fully computerised so that students can easily select the books of their choice.
Our state-of-the-art gymnastics arena is equipped with the latest international standard equipment. It provides a world class facility in which trained professionals from Future Fit use modern coaching techniques to ensure that students learn in a fun and safe environment, challenging both their bodies and their minds.

The gigantic air-conditioned indoor sports arena provides ample and marvellous opportunities for the students to explore their potential and hone their table tennis skills with state-of-the-art facilities and the latest sporting gear. The tables and other equipment are of a superior standard; robust, easy to use and in compliance with international competition standards with zero compromise on quality and safety.
BADMINTON
At The Newtown School, our Badminton facility has a standard size Court with wooden flooring, where trained professionals use modern coaching techniques to bring out the best in the students.
Shooting provides opportunities to students to taste success at the international level. It is a great sport to develop concentration and attention. The Newtown School believes in promoting such sports, which are not that popular but have a lot of scope for the studentsto do well and gain recognition in society. In sync with our thought process, we have an 8 lane 10 metre rifle shooting range in our Indoor Sports Hall. A team of our students are ably trained by the coaches of the Joydeep Karmakar Shooting Academy (JKSA) under the overall supervision of the Ace Olympian Rifle Shooter Mr Joydeep Karmakar himself.
JUNIOR PLAY AREA
It is our belief that there is nothing better than the laughter of children at play, for which we have provided our tiny- tots of classes Nursery to UKG, the colourful and vibrant play area on the ground floor of Block A, which is fitted with see-saws, slides, swings, make-believe houses, etc for their recreation and physical development. Our children from Classes I and II have access to these fun-filled rides in the state-of-the-art Roof top Play Area. While the junior play area on the ground floor has shock absorbing rubber mats, the junior roof top play area has beautifully laid artificial grass for the safety of the children.
Edusports has been entrusted with the responsibility for planning and executing programmes for the development of the health and physical fitness of students. A pioneer in the field of the development of sports curriculum in schools, EduSports is instrumental in designing the sports and physical education curriculum customised to various age groups. SEMINAR HALLS
The Seminar Hall at The Newtown School is yet another aesthetic addition to its sprawling building, housing important in-house events such as Teachers’ Orientation, Workshops and Parent Meets.
Assembly Area
CAFETERIA
While most students bring home-cooked lunches to school, canteen facilities featuring a healthy menu are available in the Cafeteria, for those who are unable to bring lunch or are simply looking for a change.
The entire campus and each and every classroom is equipped with continuous CCTV surveillance to ensure the safety and well-being of the students. We have around 500 CCTV cameras in the campus with a surveillance room to monitor them. Regular monitoring by a dedicated safety and security officer, makes the entire process completely transparent, so that any untoward event may be averted.
At The Newtown School, the safety and security of our students is of prime importance to us. Keeping this in mind, we have successfully installed CCTV cameras in all our buses with recording facilities. The cameras have been strategically placed in the front, middle and rear of the buses to ensure maximum coverage and protection.
Surveillance cameras give us the ability to keep the children in check while navigating the route to or from the School. Occurrences like bullying inside the bus can also be monitored through this system.
At The Newtown School we have RFID enabled ID Cards for ensuring the safety of each student. The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) based ID Cards track students the moment they board or alight the School Bus or enter or leave the School campus. A message is instantly sent to the parents’ registered mobile number that the child has boarded or alighted the School Bus or has entered or left the School campus.
Keeping our commitment of providing the best possible security to our students, we have introduced a chip based escort card for students dispersed via private mode. Students will only be handed over to the parents/guardians after the escort card is validated by our system. In an event where the escort card gets lost, the parents will immediately intimate the school, following which the card would be immediately deactivated by the School. Once the card is deactivated it will become invalid in our system. This mitigates any risk of handing over the child to a stranger in case the escort card falls in his/her hand. This has been implemented till class II.
The myly mobile app keeps parents informed about the curriculum followed in the School, besides keeping them abreast of their child’s activities in the classroom. It is the easiest means for the parents to communicate with the School and acts as a bridge between the two most important stakeholders of the child. There is a regular customisation in the app based on our day-to-day requirement.
Our School Buses are GPS monitored and The Skool Smart mobile app with real time bus tracking features keeps the parents virtually connected to their children. Parents can track the movement of their wards through the app and the location of the buses can be viewed when the trips are active.
Our infirmary is equipped with all the medical facilities required to combat any emergency situation in the School. It is well managed by an experienced and trained nurse. Furthermore, we have our own School Ambulance and an official tie-up with Bhagirathi Neotia Hospital, New Town, in order to take prompt and adequate action against any emergent situation.
Budding minds are enthused through a combination of formal and informal learning, indoor and outdoor activities such as singing and recitation, reading and writing, games and physical education. They have easy access to the Junior Resource Centre containing the latest selection of children’s books to satisfy their curiosity and to build upon their vocabulary.
TEACHING METHODOLOGY
The environment has been created to enable the little ones to discover the world around them, to explore their surroundings and, in the process, gradually unfurl their minds. Various avenues for mental, physical and emotional development are available to them in their playground in the form of swings, see-saws, puzzles, block games and an audio-visual facility where they can watch educational films.EVALUATION
Students are not tested formally but their progress is measured gradually through small fun-filled activities over a three term system.TEACHING METHODOLOGY

For us, nothing is more important than the safety and security of our children. With this philosphy, we have put in a great deal of thought and effort in our transportation system. We are currently maintaining a fleet of 48 air conditioned buses designed as per industry standards.
All our buses are equipped with RFID readers which record the movement of students while boarding and alighting from the bus. The system triggers automatic messages to the parents to track the movement of the students.
Our school buses are equipped with 4 nos of CCTV Camers to ensure full coverage of every bus. The CCTV system has SIM card installed therein whereby the CCTV cameras can be viewed live in case of requirement by the transport department. There is also an option of dowloading the footage in the school system once the buses come in the wifi zone of the school.
Our buses are equipped with GPS (Global Postioning System) to help track movement of the buses, delays, over-speeding and unexpected changes in the route. A seperate mobile application has been provided to parents availing the school transport for tracking the movement of the school bus.
Our bus routes are well planned to cover almost all parts of Kolkata. The buses are manned by trained drivers, male helpers and lady attendants sensitized to the needs of children. We are fully committed and determined to provide school transport service with highest safety measures and comfort to each student.

The British Council’s International School Award (ISA) is a benchmarking scheme that accredits schools as having an outstanding level of support for :
>> Nurturing global citizenship in young people and enriching teaching and learning
>> Opening a window to other countries and cultures, giving teachers and pupils a new outlook on the world.
>> Preparing pupils with skills for life and work in a global economy, opening their eyes to new opportunities.
Having its presence I over 31 countries it is perhaps the best platform to assess a school’s international standards in education and this is exactly why we have taken up the programme to provide our children across classes Nursery – VIII , an exposure to global standards in learning. As a School,we are working towards achieving this coveted award in 2017-18!
ACCESS A WORLD OF LEARNING, COLLABORATION AND CULTURE OUR PROJECTS/ ACTIVITIES:
As a School we had to frame and develop 7 projects for collaborative learning with partner schools across the globe.
1. GREETINGS:
Our school aims at incorporating greeting as the first learning skill for its students and inculcating an attitude of polite graciousness and courteousness which in turn will help them attain all round development in life. As a part of the ISA plan, greetings has been taken up right from the Nursery level to class VIII, whereby various activities pertaining to India, China, France and the U.K. have so far been executed with aplomb.
2. A RUPEE SAVED IS A RUPEE EARNED:
Introducing the importance of money and savings, which would allow the students to learn the value of money, was the primary aim of this activity. The participants consisted of students from classes I to V who were taken through the motion by means of curriculum based activities.
3. HEALTH ON MY PLATTER:
Gaining understanding of healthy food and the ill effects of junk food is an intrinsic part of nutrition and balanced living. Hence to be able to appreciate and adopt various cuisines of one’s own country as well as from other countries too is an important marker of development of any individual, which we aim to inculcate in our students. As a part of our Action Plan, students of classes V, VI VII and VIII, were taught the importance of “Family Meal Time” as a life skill and the significance of choosing the right food over junk.
4. FESTIVALS-A CULTURE KALEIDOSCOPE:
Festivals aim at spreading happiness and positivity; it incorporates socio-cultural universality and oneness and also inculcates moral, ethical and social values in people taking part in them. This project has been adopted across classes I – VIII aims at building a faith that though religion forms the core essence of most festivals, but India as a country can proudly boast of a universal fibre that characterizes them significantly and forms a strong foundation on which human ties and relations are nurtured.
5. NUMBER MAGIC:
Numbers have been the markers for civilisation.Through this project the children of classes V-VIII would take a journey through the history of numbers especially the magic of zero.
6. WHEELS OF PROGRESS:
Designed for classes VI-VIII the project aims at tracking the growth of hu7man civilisation with the discovery of wheels, right from the Indus Valley civilisation to the renaissance of modern world with the Industrial revolution.
7. COLOURS OF CHANGE:
Nature comes in various hues with the change in seasons. Our children of classes IV – VIII would discover the different shades of Nature through the seasons and simultaneously take an introspective journey on climate change and its effects upon the seasonal patterns.
OUR PARTNER SCHOOLS:
Our attempts at searching partner schools yielded encouraging results. So far we have partnered with seven schools with whom we have had Skype sessions and have exchanged our work.
1. AYLESBURY HIGH SCHOOL, UK
2. NOVASCHOOL AÑORETA, SPAIN
3. BLOOMFIELD HALL SCHOOL, PAKISTHAN
4. BLOOMFIELD HALL SCHOOL, PAKISTHAN
5. HIMANCHAL BOARDING SCHOOL, NEPAL
6. GYANSINDHU SCHOOL, NEPAL
7. DANTHURE CENTRAL COLLEGE, KANDY , CENTRAL SRILANKA
On 27th August, as a part of our ISA activity, we at The Newtown School organised an exhibition for the parents to come and view the various activities done by the students. There was a vivid display of charts, journals, cards and models that brought to light how children comprehended the various topics undertaken to get us internationally connected with our partnering school. The young learners took the parents through the journey explaining in detail the values that they derived from the projects.
The hard work of students and teachers was rewarded by an encouraging feedback from the parents who motivated us and further strengthened our collaboration with them.
“Trees are the earth’s only effort to speak to the listening heaven”... Rabindranath Tagore’s immortal words beautifully sum up the importance of trees in our ecosystem. But sadly enough we humans only realise the true worth of our natural resources only when they are on the brink of extinction or getting depleted alarmingly. In today’s world scenario, with the constant threat of global warming and frequent climate changes wreaking havoc on the earth’s ecological balance, indiscriminate felling of trees is simply adding fuel to an already blazing fire. Hence, saving trees and making the earth greener is the only feasible option and the call of the hour. In this light, Van Mahotsav gains all the more significance and value and this tree planting festival has been taken forward in our country like a crusade to save our beloved Mother Earth. Children being the future of a Nation, awareness for the Earth and love for Nature should be the primary values that they should imbibe. It is only through such steps that a country can rapidly progress on the path of development. Precisely with these views in mind, we at The Newtown School with our ideals strongly rooted in going green and truly a green school in all senses of the term, celebrated Van Mahotsav in the second week of July, as a whole school programme, to reinforce the importance of planting trees. The students, right from classes Nursery to VIII participated in several activities and events which gave a great boost to the cause. Children from Class Nursery were helped to make flower pots as a part of their art and craft programme, thereby spreading the message of "Save green and Go green". The LKG children, similarly, were enthusiastic participants in the activity of cotton dabbing on leaf cut outs which they proudly flaunted as badges later on with a strong message of “Save trees save earth”. The UKG children were asked to bring pictures of any two things we get from trees and were told to paste the same in their scrapbooks. The children were all at their individual levels explained the importance of saving trees, through stories and audio visuals in the class.
The students of class I took part in an Assembly on the same theme “Save Trees, Save Earth” where they performed a beautiful role play on how plants are important to us and how to protect and nurture them, as well as their uses in our day to day life. Subsequently, the students of class II also exercised their creativity through poster making depicting the same theme. The Director, CEO, Principal and Head Mistress of the school were also made part of the program whereby they planted saplings into the soil along with the students of class III, reaffirming the pledge that we all have taken. Children of Class IV involved themselves into creating colorful and informative charts whereas Classes V, VI and VII prepared badges with slogans, made collages and created and displayed posters with slogans highlighting the importance of planting more and more trees as their respective activities. Hence through this endeavor we made a conscious and conscientious effort to make a humble contribution to this worthy cause.
“The best way to find you is to lose yourself in the service of others” - Mahatma Gandhi’s very famous words quite sum up the importance of giving. Giving is an act of righteousness that comes from our duty as human beings to help others. The Joy of Giving week or more famously the “Daan Utsav” corroborates and substantiates the above adages and continues the Indian tradition of philanthropy and reinforces the sanctity of Daan. Launched in 2009, the festival is celebrated every year – commencing on Gandhi Jayanti – from October 2 to 8.
Our School took part in a unique initiative where by the children were made to understand the relevance and significance involved with the Joy of giving selflessly. The noted radio jockey Praveen was a part of this beautiful initiative along with the students, the teachers and the school Management. Our children took a special initiative as part of the Daan Utsav, whereby a selected group of students paid a visit to Nirmala Shishu Bhavan - Missionaries of Charity, interacted with the lesser privileged children over there and gifted them with goodies contributed by all our students from classes III – VIII and the School Management. The smiles on their faces are the beautiful memories that our children brought back with them. They pledged to go back again to re-discover the happiness of giving.
China and Martial art has been synonymous since time immortal. Tai- Chi which is a martial art is widely practiced in China for its defense training and health benefits. The word “Ta-Chi” is a Mandarin abbreviation of “tàijíquán” which literally means "Supreme Ultimate Boxing".
As an educational Institution with a goal to provide a holistic all round development of our learners in mind, body and soul, we had a Tai Chi demonstration recently in the School Auditorium to help our young minds of classes V-VIII to make them know about this art form.
The demonstration program was chaired by Mr. Ma Zhanwu, the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China. He was accompanied by Consul Shao Yujin and Tai- Chi instructors Madam Zhiyuan, Mr. Zhang Xuguang and Mr. Gao Guangda. It was a matter of great honour for us to be praised by the Consul General for “providing clean and hygienic environment accompanied with the latest technology driven education”. The Consul General promised us all help regarding the School’s future plans to promote successful exchange program for our students and teachers.
Thank you for your interest in The Newtown School. Please note that we are closed for admissions in the current academic session i.e. 2018-19. Admissions for the next academic session i.e. 2019-20 shall be announced in the first week of November 2018.
